When faults are found, engineers diagnose electrical and electronic problems, carry out repairs, and replace defective components, all while adhering to strict health and safety protocols.

Typical responsibilities extend beyond hands-on technical work. Service engineers must meticulously document all inspections, test results, and remedial actions in detailed logs and reports. They are often responsible for managing their own stock of parts and materials, as well as maintaining a company vehicle to ensure they are fully equipped for each site visit. Strong customer care skills are essential, as engineers interact directly with clients, providing clear explanations of system status, recommending necessary upgrades, and advising on best practices for system management. The role demands a disciplined approach to time management, as engineers must meet scheduled service windows and complete paperwork accurately and on time.

To succeed in these jobs, candidates typically need a solid foundation in electrical theory and practice. Common requirements include recognized electrical qualifications such as City & Guilds 2360 Parts 1 & 2 or an equivalent NVQ, along with up-to-date knowledge of the IEE 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Specialist fire industry certifications, such as those from the Fire Industry Association (FIA), are highly valued. A deep understanding of health and safety legislation, safe working practices, and the ability to work at heights (often up to 3 meters) and lift moderate weights are standard. A full, clean driving licence is almost always necessary due to the field-based nature of the work.
