Methodology & sources

Methodology - Nicaragua (2026)

Educational model - not a DGI assessment, not a tax return, not tax advice. Currency NIO (Cordoba, C$).

Employee (IR rentas del trabajo + INSS)

  • IR rentas del trabajo is a progressive annual table (LCT Art. 23) on net income: exempt up to C$100,000; 15% to 200,000; 20% to 350,000; 25% to 500,000; 30% above 500,000.
  • The taxable base is annual gross minus the employee INSS (laboral) contributions for the year.
  • INSS laboral: employee 7% of gross, with no ceiling (the contributory-salary cap was abolished by the 2019 reform). Employer (regimen integral) 21.5% (up to 50 employees) / 22.5% (over 50), plus the INATEC training levy 2% (employer).

Self-employed (rentas de actividades economicas)

  • Natural persons with gross annual income up to C$12,000,000 compute IR on net income using the same progressive table (exempt to 100,000; 15/20/25/30%); above C$12,000,000 a flat 30% applies.
  • The Pago Minimo Definitivo (PMD) of 1% of gross income is the floor (tax due = greater of computed IR or PMD). Out of scope: the Cuota Fija small-taxpayer regime, the 10% professional-service advance, and the 2-3% PMD for large taxpayers. INSS is voluntary for the self-employed.
