Methodology - Jamaica (2026)
Educational model - not a TAJ assessment, not a tax return, not tax advice. Currency JMD (J$).
Employee (PAYE + statutory deductions)
- Deduction waterfall: gross emoluments - NIS (3%, capped at insurable earnings J$5,000,000/year = J$416,666.67/month) = statutory income.
- Education Tax = 2.25% of statutory income (a parallel, threshold-free levy; it does not reduce the PAYE base and is not deductible for income tax).
- Chargeable income = statutory income - the income-tax threshold J$1,902,360/year (J$158,530/month, effective 1 April 2026). PAYE = 25% on chargeable income up to J$6,000,000/year (J$500,000/month) and 30% on the excess.
- NHT = 2% of gross (no ceiling); it sits outside the tax computation, is not deductible, and is refundable to the employee after 7 years.
- Employer-side (for total cost): NIS 3%, NHT 3%, Education Tax 3.5%, HEART/NSTA 3% (employers with monthly emoluments over J$14,444).
- Out of scope: approved pension/superannuation deductions, the pensioner / golden-ager (65+) extra exemptions (+J$250,040 each), taxable benefits in kind, and the blended J$1,876,614 calendar-year threshold used only for the annual S04 reconciliation.

Self-employed (sole proprietor)
- Self-employed individuals pay the same threshold (J$1,902,360/year) and 25%/30% scale on net profit, plus NIS 6% (they cover both halves, on earnings capped at J$5,000,000/year = max J$300,000), Education Tax 2.25% of statutory income, and NHT 3% of net profit.
- Statutory income = net profit - NIS; chargeable income = statutory income - threshold. Out of scope: the 2% NHT special rate for in-home domestic workers / gardeners / caregivers, approved pension deductions, and quarterly S04A estimated payments.
