Methodology & sources
Methodology - Bermuda (2026/27)
Educational model - not a Government of Bermuda assessment, not tax advice. Currency BMD (Bermudian dollar, pegged 1:1 to the US dollar). Tax year 1 Apr 2026 - 31 Mar 2027.
Employee (payroll tax + social insurance + pension)
- Bermuda has no personal income tax. Instead the employer withholds the employee portion of payroll tax, a progressive scale (2026/27): 0.25% up to BMD 48,000; 7.75% to 96,000; 10.75% to 200,000; 11.5% to 500,000; 12.5% to 1,000,000. Remuneration above the BMD 1,000,000 cap is not charged.
- Social Insurance (Contributory Pension Fund): a flat BMD 37.65/week employee share (BMD 1,957.80/year); the employer matches.
- Occupational pension (National Pension Scheme): employee 5% + employer 5% for covered persons (Bermudians and spouses). This calculator models the covered case; non-Bermudian expats are typically exempt.
- Out of scope: the expat case, the pensionable-earnings base nuance (we apply 5% to gross), and the employer payroll-tax portion (tiered by the employer's total annual payroll).

Self-employed (sole trader)
- A self-employed person pays payroll tax on their remuneration (the employee-portion progressive bands are modelled here as the defensible minimum) plus the full Social Insurance contribution, both halves: BMD 75.30/week (BMD 3,915.60/year).
- Out of scope: the employer payroll-tax portion (tiered by category; 0% for some self-employed such as farmers and fishermen) and self-employed occupational pension provisions.
