Methodology & sources
Methodology - Belize (2026)
Educational model - not a Belize Tax Service assessment, not a tax return, not tax advice. Currency BZD (Belize dollar, $; pegged 2:1 to the US dollar).
Employee (Income Tax + Social Security)
- Income tax is a flat 25% on chargeable income. The first BZD 29,000 of annual income is exempt (Income and Business Tax (Amendment) Act 2024).
- Standard personal relief: earners above BZD 32,000/year deduct a BZD 19,600 relief, so tax is 25% of (income - 19,600). A cushion band applies between BZD 29,000 and 32,000 where tax is only the amount above 29,000, avoiding a cliff at the exemption.
- Income tax base is gross pay; the Social Security employee contribution is not deductible.
- Social Security Board (SSB): employee 4.5% + employer 5.5% (combined contribution schedule), assessed on insurable wages capped at BZD 520/week.

Self-employed (sole trader)
- Self-employed traders pay Business Tax on gross receipts rather than income tax on profit. The general trade/commission rate modelled here is 1.75% of gross receipts.
- Net is estimated as receipts less business expenses less the 1.75% Business Tax. Business Tax is turnover-based, so it is due even in a loss year.
- Out of scope: the many sector-specific Business Tax rates (professional services, rents, financial institutions) and the income-tax credit mechanism for some Business Tax payers.
