Methodology & sources

Bangladesh salary calculator — methodology (English)

This tool implements a simplified natural person model aligned with the Income Tax Act, 2023 and NBR Paripatra-style slabs for assessment years 2026–27 / 2027–28: progressive rates, Sixth Schedule employment exclusion (one-third of employment income or Tk 500,000, whichever is lower, raised from Tk 450,000 by Finance Ordinance 2025), general investment rebate (lower of 3% of income, 15% of eligible investment, Tk 10 lakh), minimum tax (Tk 5,000 or Tk 1,000 for new taxpayers when income exceeds the profile threshold), optional private PF on basic wages, and optional wealth surcharge. Freelancer mode supports the temporary IT / digital services exemption (1 Jul 2024–30 Jun 2027) when the bank-transfer condition is ticked.

Salaried employee

Uses employment income, exclusion, rebate, minimum tax, and optional PF. Net-to-gross uses a numerical search on annual cash after tax and PF.

Freelancer / business income

Taxable profit = receipts minus expenses (or direct net profit input). Same slab engine; IT freelancing exemption zeroes tax in the model when applicable.

Frequently asked questions

Bangladesh - salaried employee

What is the Sixth Schedule exclusion?
Sixth Schedule Part 1 Clause 27 (Income Tax Act 2023): excludes from income 1/3 of salary or Tk 450k (FY 2026-27 model; simpler version), whichever is lower. In practice: the first Tk 450k of annual salary is exempt on top of the nil base (Tk 375k general). The calculator applies this automatically. Check the current Finance Ordinance - the cap may change.
Nil base - how does it depend on the profile?
The tax-free threshold depends on profile: General individual Tk 375k, Woman / senior 65+ Tk 425k, Third gender / disabled Tk 500k, War-wounded freedom fighter Tk 525k. Plus Tk 50k for each disabled dependent (max 3). Pick the profile in the calculator - it directly affects tax on low incomes.
Section 78 investment rebate - what qualifies?
Eligible investment / expenditure (up to 25% of taxable income, rebate capped at 15% or Tk 10 lakh): DPS (Deposit Pension Scheme), life insurance premium, Zakat, gifts to approved charities, pension fund, stock market investment (Shanchaypatra, listed shares). Enter the total in "Eligible investment" - the calculator applies the 15% rebate automatically.
Minimum tax - how much and when?
Tk 1,000 (from FY 2024-25) for any taxpayer above the nil base - regardless of calculated progressive tax. If you do not cross the nil base at all, no minimum tax. The former Tk 5,000 for Dhaka/Chittagong city corporations and Tk 3,000 elsewhere has been revised. The calculator uses the Tk 1,000 floor.
Does Bangladesh charge VAT on salary?
No - VAT (currently 15% standard with various reduced rates) does not apply to employee salary. Salary income is income tax only. VAT is paid by businesses / freelancers (separate calculator mode). Supplementary Duty also does not apply to salary. In practice employees pay VAT as consumers (invisible on payslip).
Wealth surcharge - when does it apply?
Surcharge on net wealth (assets − liabilities): up to Tk 4 crore = 0%, 4-10 crore = 10%, 10-20 crore = 20%, 20-50 crore = 30%, above 50 crore = 35%. Plus trigger: more than 1 motor car OR house > 8,000 sq ft triggers 10% surcharge regardless of wealth. The calculator has "Apply wealth surcharge model" + band selector.
