Job Description:

The Zoning Administrator / Code Enforcement Officer is responsible for administering and enforcing the City of Magee’s Zoning Ordinance, land-use regulations, property maintenance standards, and related municipal codes. This position ensures compliance with the City’s development standards, promotes orderly growth, and protects the health, safety, and welfare of Magee residents. Under the supervision of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen, this position works closely with the City Clerk, Building Official, Planning & Zoning Commission, Public Works, and the Magee Fire Department to carry out zoning reviews, inspections, permitting, and enforcement actions.

Job Responsibility:

  • Administers and enforces the City of Magee Zoning Ordinance, including regulations for residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, and overlay districts
  • Reviews zoning requests such as rezonings, variances, special exceptions, and conditional uses and prepares staff summaries for the Magee Planning Commission and Board of Aldermen
  • Maintains and updates the Official Zoning Map of the City of Magee, ensuring all amendments adopted by the Board are recorded
  • Reviews site plans, plats, and building permit applications for compliance with the zoning ordinance, setbacks, signage requirements, parking standards, and landscaping requirements
  • Conducts field inspections to verify compliance with approved zoning cases and development plans
  • Coordinates with the City Clerk’s office to ensure public notices, advertising, and hearing procedures comply with Mississippi law
  • Enforces Municipal Code provisions, including nuisance abatement, tall grass and weeds, junk and debris, unsafe or dilapidated structures, abandoned or inoperable vehicles, and signage violations
  • Responds to citizen complaints submitted through City Hall, Board of Aldermen, or police dispatch
  • Issues Notices of Violation, Orders to Abate, and citations under authority granted by Magee’s municipal code
  • Works with property owners and businesses to achieve voluntary compliance before initiating legal action
  • Coordinates with the Magee Police Department for violations requiring citations and with the Magee Fire Department regarding unsafe structures or fire code concerns
  • Prepares cases for Magee Municipal Court and provides documentation and testimony as required
  • Oversees enforcement of regulations related to mobile homes, temporary structures, and unpermitted construction, in accordance with city ordinance
  • Reviews zoning compliance for all building permits issued through City Hall
  • Ensures all construction, renovation, or land-use activities meet zoning requirements before the issuance of building or occupancy permits
  • Maintains complete files of inspections, permits, correspondence, and enforcement actions in accordance with city record-keeping standards
  • Works with the City Clerk to maintain accurate records for the Planning Commission and Board of Aldermen agenda items
  • Provides guidance to residents, builders, developers, and business owners regarding Magee’s zoning and code enforcement requirements
  • Assists applicants with navigating the Planning & Zoning process, including deadlines, application requirements, and public hearing procedures
  • Communicates effectively and professionally, even in situations involving conflict or noncompliance
  • Educates the public on city ordinances, standards, and expectations for property maintenance

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • coursework in planning, community development, construction, or public administration preferred
  • Experience in zoning, building inspection, code enforcement, or municipal government preferred
  • Certification as a Zoning Official, Code Enforcement Officer, or related ICC credentials preferred or obtainable within 12–18 months of employment
  • Valid Mississippi driver’s license
  • Knowledge of the City of Magee Zoning Ordinance, subdivision regulations, and municipal code provisions
  • Familiarity with Mississippi laws governing zoning, land use, municipal courts, and code enforcement
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans, construction drawings, plats, and zoning maps
  • Strong communication, documentation, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise staff reports for the Planning Commission and Board of Aldermen
  • Competence in conducting inspections, taking photographs, documenting evidence, and maintaining orderly case files
  • Proficiency with computers, GIS mapping, basic drafting, and permitting or code enforcement software
