Job Description

We are seeking a caring, patient and committed Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant to join our friendly primary school team in North Cornwall. The successful candidate will work within a mixed Year 1 classroom, providing consistent 1:1 support for a child with additional needs on an ongoing basis. This is a rewarding role requiring a nurturing approach, strong communication skills, and the ability to build a trusting relationship with a young learner to support their academic, social and emotional development.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide consistent 1:1 support for a Year 1 pupil with Special Educational Needs
  • Work under the direction of the class teacher and SENCO to implement individual support plans
  • Adapt learning activities and resources to meet the child's needs
  • Support the pupil's engagement in classroom activities and promote inclusion
  • Encourage positive behaviour, independence and social interaction
  • Monitor and record progress, reporting observations to teaching staff
  • Use appropriate strategies to support communication, emotional regulation and focus
  • Assist with transitions, routines and classroom structure
  • Support the wider class when required, maintaining a positive learning environment

Requirements

  • Experience working with children in a primary school setting
  • Understanding of Special Educational Needs and inclusive practice
  • Patient, calm and nurturing approach
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to follow guidance and adapt quickly to pupil needs

Nice to have

  • Experience supporting pupils in Key Stage 1 (particularly Year 1)
  • Knowledge of early literacy and numeracy support strategies
  • Experience working 1:1 with pupils with additional needs
  • Relevant TA or childcare qualification (e.g. Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant)
