Job Description:

The Yard & Equipment Manager will be responsible for overseeing the Surespan Yard in Langley along with the Equipment Fleet. This includes coordinating with relevant suppliers to ensure equipment and maintenance are kept up to date, ensuring that all logistical needs are met through the use of internal and external providers and managing staff on site in Langley.

Job Responsibility:

  • Ensure equipment is always available in good working order: Organize, delegate, liaise with operators, crew, supervisory personnel, project teams, in-house mechanics and external facilities regarding the timely repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, vehicles and tooling
  • Ensure equipment’s mechanical problems are anticipated, prevented where possible, properly analyzed and promptly resolved
  • Coordinate with Surespan Operations team to ensure proper allocation of equipment resources to project sites
  • Managing transportation of materials and equipment to projects sites and building and maintaining effective relationships with transportation service providers
  • Managing the vehicle fleet with input on vehicle purchases
  • Management of GPS tracking system for fleet vehicles
  • Ensure Surespan decals are on all company heavy equipment and vehicles
  • Monitor the equipment acquisition and parts purchase process: Review invoices and requests for equipment repair authorization
  • Ensure quality parts are purchased at competitive prices and that established purchase procedures are employed
  • Monitor vendors for quality and reasonable pricing of purchased parts and materials
  • As directed by the President, facilitate in the sale, fabrication, acquisition and/or safe disposal of equipment regardless of type of asset or value of item
  • Organize external equipment rentals and leases in conjunction with and approved by Surespan Operations Teams
  • Procuring and maintaining inventory of non-project specific and re-usable materials, consumables, temporary works materials and fabricated temporary works structures
  • Managing the inventory of tools and small equipment, ensuring inspection, repair and storage on demob and accessibility for future projects, including ensuring Superintendents comply with procedures and the standardized approach to tool procurement
  • Management of Equipment & Logistics Coordinator and Labour staff at the Yard
  • National Safety Code Fleet management for commercial vehicles and trailers for Surespan’s heavy hauling/all-terrain crane fleet
  • Scheduling and tracking of NSC/ CVSE inspections and certifications of equipment in conjunction with our safety division
  • Provide training to shop mechanics in company policies and procedures
  • Ensure external mechanics are working to pre-approved budgets with agreed rates
  • Ensure timely reporting of matters relating to insurance, including: Add/removing equipment from insurance including rentals in conjunction with Head Office
  • Providing back up documentation for claims
  • Review of equipment for annual insurance renewals
  • Maintain a safe working yard/shop environment through good housekeeping, safety awareness training and proactive employee involvement in conjunction with the safety division
  • Regular review and sign-off of logbooks, inspections, pre-trip driver logs, etc
  • In conjunction with the safety division, assist and/or investigate equipment incidents and damages/deficiencies
  • Prepare investigation and equipment damage reports per Company Policy
  • Assist with implementation of corrective actions
  • Enforce Surespan’s policies, rules, procedures and practices regarding equipment and maintenance program as well as the EHS program
  • Stay current with equipment management trends, initiatives and industry standards
  • Additional duties and responsibilities may be added at the discretion of the President

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience working with industrial equipment in the construction industry
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License and clean drivers abstract
  • Proficient user of MS Office with emphasis on Excel and comfortable learning new technology and software
  • Able to lift and carry 25 lbs loads regularly
  • Seek win-win solutions when problem solving

  • Have a common-sense approach and sound critical thinking skills
  • Self-motivated, with strong time management and task prioritization skills
