Workshop Technician – Gloucestershire County Council - supporting GFRS. A unique and exciting technical career supporting frontline public services for Gloucestershire County Council. As a Workshop Technician, you’ll work on one of the most diverse and interesting fleets in the region. No two days are the same — and your technical skill will directly support emergency services and essential council operations.
Job Responsibility:
Servicing and repairing HGV, LGV and passenger cars, including statutory inspections
inspecting, servicing and repairs of specialist fleet equipment
diagnostic investigations across light and heavy fleet & equipment
mobile maintenance, travelling across the county to keep GCC and GFRS vehicles roadworthy
working on fire appliances, pumps, boats, and specialist rescue equipment
servicing portable power units, lighting rigs and hydraulic/pneumatic systems
training on equipment used across the GCC/GFRS fleet
supporting equipment readiness for front‑line fire appliances
fabrication, engineering, vehicle conversions, and occasional roadside recovery (full training provided)
collection and delivery of vehicles as required
attending and delivering technical training to the wider team
attending locations to support our on-call and out-of-hour cover
reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, Workshops Manager & GFRS Control when on-call
Requirements:
Current Recognised qualification within the motor industry or equivalent (City & Guilds / NVQ)
strong diagnostic, service and repair experience
ability to prioritise and manage workloads effectively
flexibility and a methodical approach
excellent communication and teamwork
experience of working within a busy workshop
must hold a minimum recognised technical qualification in motor vehicle maintenance or repair
commitment to ongoing professional development
What we offer:
37‑hour working week, Monday–Friday (normal hours)
guaranteed paid, rota’d standby/on‑call allowances of over £30 per 24 hours
Welcome Payment of up to £3,500 on top of earnings (subject to T&Cs)
training progression to Category C license
