Position Overview: The Workshop Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day management of the workshop, ensuring all vehicle maintenance, inspections and repairs are completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards. The role leads the workshop team, allocates workloads, maintains compliance with DVSA and company standards, and supports the delivery of a reliable fleet through effective planning, coaching and operational oversight.
Job Responsibility
Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of workshop technicians, allocating work to ensure maintenance schedules and operational priorities are achieved
Promote and maintain a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with company Health & Safety policies and DVSA requirements
Carry out or oversee vehicle inspections, servicing, maintenance and repairs to ensure the fleet remains roadworthy and compliant
Provide technical guidance, coaching and quality assurance to workshop technicians
Conduct daily workshop briefings and maintain effective communication across the team
Support the diagnosis of complex mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults where required
Ensure preventative maintenance programmes are completed to minimise vehicle downtime
Oversee the preparation and presentation of vehicles and trailers for annual testing
Assist with roadside and site breakdowns where required
Maintain accurate maintenance records, service documentation and workshop administration
Monitor workshop performance, productivity and housekeeping standards, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
Requirements
Recognised apprenticeship and NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
Proven experience in an HGV workshop environment, with previous supervisory or team leader experience desirable
Strong technical knowledge of HGV maintenance, diagnostics and repair techniques
Good understanding of DVSA regulations, vehicle compliance and industry best practice
IRTEC HGV Inspection Accreditation is desirable
Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and develop others
Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads in a fast-paced environment
Proactive problem-solving skills and a commitment to delivering high standards of quality and safety
Competent IT skills with experience of workshop management systems and Microsoft Office
Class C driving licence
Welding and fabrication skills would be advantageous but are not essential
