Our client is seeking a motivated Wood Truss Designer / Estimator at the entry to mid-level who is eager to grow into advanced design work, including light gauge steel (LGS) systems. This role combines design, estimating, and customer support responsibilities, making it ideal for someone looking to build a long-term career in component manufacturing and structural systems. The right candidate will start with wood truss design and estimating, with a structured path to learning light gauge steel design and expanding technical capabilities
Job Responsibility
Design & Drafting (Wood Truss Systems)
Design residential and light commercial roof and floor truss systems using software such as MiTek, Alpine, or similar
Interpret architectural drawings, blueprints, and specifications
Layout truss systems for structural integrity, efficiency, and manufacturability
Revise designs based on field conditions, engineering feedback, or customer requests
Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes and standards
Estimating & Takeoffs
Perform quantity takeoffs from plans and specifications
Prepare accurate and competitive material estimates for truss packages
Work with sales teams to develop pricing and bid proposals
Review bid documents and identify scope requirements
Customer & Internal Support
Communicate with builders, contractors, and internal teams to clarify project requirements
Provide design and estimate updates as projects evolve
Assist with resolving design issues during production and installation
Growth Path – Light Gauge Steel (LGS) Design
Receive training on light gauge steel framing systems and design principles
Learn LGS design software and detailing standards
Assist senior designers with LGS projects as skills develop
Gradually take ownership of LGS design and estimating responsibilities
Expand knowledge of mixed-material systems (wood + steel applications)
Requirements
Associate’s degree or technical training in drafting, construction, engineering, or related field (preferred)
Basic understanding of construction plans and building components
Strong math skills and attention to detail
Proficiency in AutoCAD or willingness to learn design software
Experience designing wood trusses and/or estimating building materials
Proficiency with MiTek, Alpine, or similar truss design software
Solid understanding of structural design principles and load paths
Experience working with builders, contractors, or construction teams
Nice to have
Exposure to light gauge steel or an interest in learning steel framing systems
Background in lumber, building materials, or component manufacturing
Knowledge of building codes and engineering fundamentals
