Job Description

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Dispatcher I for the Wyoming Highway Patrol Dispatch Program in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This entry-level position provides formal classroom and on-the-job training. Dispatchers are the first voice of hope during emergencies on Wyoming's highways, requiring excellent interpersonal skills, good memory retention, and the ability to calmly and accurately process information under pressure. Work involves rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide the vital communications link between the public and emergency services utilizing a two-way radio system and extensive computer operation
  • Ensure law enforcement officers receive the necessary assistance and backup with an emphasis on officer safety
  • Learn basic knowledge, fundamentals, and procedures of law enforcement dispatching
  • Complete on-the-job training involving actual workplace conditions
  • Perform duties of the next level while in an evaluation status

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Dispatch)
  • Associate's Degree (with no prior experience required)
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must be able to work shifts, holidays, and weekends
  • Must be physically able to hear and record messages transmitted over radio, telephone, or similar devices
  • Must pass an FBI fingerprint check
  • Must not have any felony convictions or indictments
  • Must not have used marijuana within one (1) year of the test date
  • Must not have used any other controlled substance within three (3) years of the test date
  • Must not have driving privilege suspensions within three (3) years of the test date
  • Applicants will be subject to a thorough background investigation, including a credit check and psychological, polygraph, medical, and drug testing
