Supports the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). The Weather Observer will perform weather observing and data collection tasking under the supervision of the Meteorological Operations Manager and Camp Manager.
Job Responsibility
Weather observation, recording, and reporting of surface weather conditions
Setting up and maintaining portable weather station and operating handheld ceilometer
Operating and maintaining backup sensors
Assisting with daily reporting
Communicating with McMurdo via HF radio and Iridium phone
Loading/unloading aircraft
Preparing cargo for movement
Assisting with waste retrograde and hazardous cargo identification
Performing fuel tests on aviation fuel
Performing fuel transfers
Assisting with tracking maintenance and repair needs of all equipment
Assisting with operating small mechanical equipment
Providing mechanical assistance in the repair of vehicles and other equipment
Operating light equipment vehicles
Assisting in the installation and maintenance of the skiway
Assisting grantees with support requests
Performing functions with manual equipment
Assisting with cooking, track food use, plan re-supply, galley tasks and dishwashing
Requirements
High School diploma or GED
A minimum of three (3) years of combined experience in any of the following: weather reporting, equipment operation, cargo movement, fuel operations, mechanical equipment proficiency, logistics support, or other related experience. One of the three years’ experience must be in weather observation (METAR) code
Demonstrated ability to observe, record and report wind direction, wind speed, cloud height, cloud cover, surface visibility, and other weather conditions
Demonstrated ability to work in remote and isolated environments
Computer competency and proficient in MS Office Suite

Valid Driver’s license issued in the United States
Wilderness First Responder Certification
Weather Observer Training
Federal Meteorological Handbook (FMH1-b) experience
