Appian Way Energy Partners (AWEP) is a Cambridge, MA-based energy trading and analytics firm founded in December 2014. Specializing in congestion trading within U.S. wholesale electricity markets, AWEP employs a multidisciplinary team to develop fundamental models of US electricity markets and translates those economic models into profitable trading strategies. Appian Way Energy Partners is currently accepting applications for a Weather Data Scientist to work fully onsite at our office in Cambridge, MA. This role will focus on development and implementation of short-term commercial trading strategies, as well as providing data science and meteorological contributions to our longer-term electricity market trading strategies.
Job Responsibility:
Work directly with short-term traders to identify weather-based trading strategies
Assist team in building and maintaining energy price valuation models that incorporate weather forecast data and power market fundamentals to inform directional and relative value trading decisions
Quantify how evolving weather scenarios impact net load, congestion, renewable output, and ultimately price movements across US electricity markets
Integrate custom and external weather model outputs (ECMWF, GFS, HRRR, etc.) into renewable energy and demand forecasts Meteorological and Data Science Support of Long-Term Trading (i.e. FTR and OTC power markets)
Track extreme weather risks, their forward market implications and associated trading opportunities
Consult with traders on longer-term weather patterns (monthly to seasonal) and help frame expectations around load variability, hydrology, wind/solar patterns, and probabilistic outcomes
Collaborate with traders and analysts on improving fundamental optimal power flow models via improved load forecasting, renewable modeling and scenario analysis
Develop automated tools for identifying historical congestion pattern correlations to market fundamental drivers including weather factors and power fundamentals such as transmission outages
Requirements:
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Applied Math, or related field
2+ years of experience in operational weather forecasting or applied weather analytics
Expertise in short-term numerical weather prediction and interpretation for North America region
Able to design, build and maintain own models (python strongly preferred)
Fluency in weather data analysis tools and ability to work with large datasets
Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex information clearly
Nice to have:
Understanding of the weather-to-load and weather-to-generation relationships in the regional electricity markets of US
Knowledge of renewable forecasting of wind and solar power
Experience working with electricity markets and understanding of how weather ties into locational marginal pricing, congestion risk, DA/RT price arbitrage, electricity demand and renewable output uncertainties
