Lead and grow a high-impact Water Environment and Resource Management capability within the UK water sector, shaping major sustainable infrastructure, non-infrastructure, flood risk and catchment management programmes while building a team and client portfolio.
Job Responsibility:
Lead water environmental and water resources inputs across municipal water and wastewater programmes, flood and coastal erosion risk management (FCERM) strategies, appraisals and designs, natural flood management, blue-green solutions and sustainable drainage, hydraulic modelling and strategic catchment-based solutions from feasibility through detailed design support
Provide strategic water-environment advice aligned to regulatory frameworks, ensuring compliance with UK legislation and water industry requirements while balancing environmental, operational and commercial considerations
Oversee preparation and review of technical deliverables, ensuring robust methodologies, high-quality reporting, defensible modelling outputs and clear audit trails for regulatory approval
Support multidisciplinary and stakeholder coordination, integrating environmental considerations into treatment, infrastructure and resilience schemes to ensure practical and sustainable outcomes
Act as a senior client-facing technical lead, facilitating workshops and technical reviews, advising water company, public sector and private clients, regulators and partners, and developing long-term, trusted relationships within the sector
Provide relevant design assurance, advice and technical support during delivery, including reviewing contractor proposals, responding to technical queries and supporting regulatory and stakeholder engagement where required
Grow the Water Environment capability through business development and work winning, identifying strategic opportunities, shaping scopes, contributing to bids, and building a sustainable forward workload across AMP programmes
Translate the UK water growth strategy into delivery actions, identifying priority programmes (e.g., AMP8, SROs, flood and resilience opportunities), capability gaps and targeted investment areas
Build and lead the Water Environment team, including recruitment, mentoring, technical governance and structured skills development to strengthen capability across environmental planning and assessment
Collaborate with the wider business to enhance service offerings, developing integrated, sustainability-led solutions that support water company environmental commitments and long-term asset resilience
Requirements:
Degree-qualified in a relevant discipline such as Environmental Engineering, Water Resources, Civil Engineering, Hydrology or Environmental Science (or equivalent)
Registered with chartered status or equivalent with a professional body (e.g., CIWEM, ICE or equivalent)
Extensive experience delivering flood risk assessments, drainage strategies, hydraulic modelling and sustainable water infrastructure solutions within regulated infrastructure environments
Strong understanding of UK environmental legislation, planning and permitting requirements relevant to water and wastewater projects
Experience in strategic asset planning, catchment-based approaches, resilience planning and sustainable water management, with the ability to balance environmental, social and operational objectives
Familiarity with relevant modelling and assessment tools (e.g., hydraulic/drainage modelling platforms, GIS-based analysis) and structured environmental reporting processes
Strong track record within the UK regulated water sector, with experience supporting water company environmental, water resources or resilience programmes
Confident client and stakeholder leader, able to represent the organisation in regulatory discussions, technical forums and strategic planning conversations
Demonstrable contribution to business development and work winning, including opportunity identification, bid development and client relationship growth
Proven people leadership experience, including building teams, mentoring professionals and fostering a high-performance, collaborative culture
Must have the right to work in the UK
