Job Description:

Water Craftsman for the Department of Public Works in Norwood. Non-Exempt, Union, 40 hours per week. FY26, Grade PW6.

Job Responsibility:

  • Perform skilled equipment operation and manual labor in the construction, operation and maintenance of the town’s water system
  • Installs water mains and lines, hydrants, valves, and pumps
  • excavates trenches and backfills excavations
  • repairs water mains, service lines, hydrants, and gates
  • Responds to emergencies
  • makes repairs of main and service leaks
  • Performs general customer service activities including service turn-ons and shut-offs
  • Operates tapping machine, backhoe, front-end loader, and hand operating equipment
  • Performs similar or related work as required

Requirements:

  • High school education
  • three years of public works construction and maintenance experience including heavy equipment operation experience
  • or any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid CDL license or CDL permit, required
  • Certified Operator-Water Distribution License
  • Hydraulic License required
  • Participation in mandated drug and alcohol random testing program
  • Knowledge of public works and water systems equipment operation
  • Familiar with AMRs and water meters and backflow devices
  • Ability to work extended hours as a result of emergencies

  • Visit all stores in their assigned areas on a scheduled basis to keep the assigned equipment clean and in good operating condition. This includes beverage equipment monthly and semiannual HVAC and refrigeration PMs.
  • Plan daily routes that are efficient and cost effective.
  • Prepare and coordinate store for remodel, openings, and project work as specified by the Lead Technician.
  • Support Public Relations’ during opening celebrations.
  • Maintain the integrity of the asset tagging system including tag audits, transferring assets and setting up assets in new and remodeled stores.
  • Maintain and report all necessary paperwork and electronic communication as determined by the Lead Technician Supervisor in a prompt, orderly and timely manner, which includes invoicing and payroll documents.
