Job Description:

Complex seeks a Visual Effects Supervisor to lead and revolutionize VFX production at their NYC studio. This role involves establishing and leading virtual production workflows, including virtual set creation. The aim is to enhance creative control, speed up iteration, and integrate advanced technologies for innovative content. The supervisor will use Unreal Engine, motion capture, animation, and AI to create visuals exceeding expectations for a youth audience. Reporting to the VP of Production, this leader will drive innovation and technical excellence, pushing the boundaries of visual effects supervision and championing new technologies across teams.

Job Responsibility:

  • Lead and oversee all facets of visual effects production from concept development to final delivery
  • Collaborate with VP of Production, directors, creative leads, and production teams to define VFX requirements and develop visual strategies
  • Spearhead the design, development, and construction of dynamic virtual sets and environments within Unreal Engine
  • Develop, implement, and manage robust virtual production pipelines
  • Oversee and direct all motion capture sessions
  • Manage the end-to-end motion capture pipeline
  • Utilize Blender for 3D modeling, texturing, character rigging, animation, and VFX shot production
  • Establish, maintain, and refine efficient animation pipelines
  • Champion, supervise, and participate in the practical application of AI tools across the VFX workflow
  • Implement AI-driven solutions for concept art generation, pre-visualization, automated rotoscoping, and workflow automation
  • Research, evaluate, and implement State-of-the-Art visual effects techniques and emerging software
  • Design, document, and manage efficient and scalable VFX pipelines
  • Provide expert on-set supervision during principal photography for sequences involving visual effects
  • Foster a collaborative, innovative environment within the VFX team
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and creative leadership to VFX artists, animators, and technical staff

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 7-10+ years of progressive, hands-on experience as a Visual Effects Supervisor in high-volume, fast-paced production environments such as broadcast media, streaming content creation, feature film, or AAA game development
  • Expert-level, hands-on proficiency with Unreal Engine (UE4/UE5) including designing, building, lighting, and optimizing complex virtual sets for virtual production
  • Advanced proficiency in Unreal Engine's Blueprint visual scripting system
  • Strong understanding of Unreal Engine's lighting systems, shading techniques, material creation workflows, and rendering pipelines
  • Practical experience with Unreal Engine's Composure and Sequencer tools
  • Working knowledge of integrating professional camera tracking systems and managing genlock/timecode synchronization
  • Extensive practical experience across all stages of the virtual production lifecycle
  • Demonstrable expertise in motion capture technologies and managing the full motion capture pipeline
  • Strong proficiency in Blender for 3D tasks including modeling, sculpting, UV mapping, texturing, character rigging, keyframe animation, and VFX elements
  • Comprehensive understanding and application of the 12 Principles of Animation
  • Proven hands-on experience with generative AI tools: Google Gemini, OpenAI Suite (Sora, DALL-E, GPT models), Anthropic Claude, Kling AI, Runway
  • Expert-level knowledge of the entire visual effects pipeline
  • Strong foundation in visual storytelling, cinematography principles, lighting techniques, and color theory
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills
  • Outstanding communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Available to work full-time in an office environment located in New York City

Nice to have:

  • Portfolio showcasing high-quality visual effects work with expertise in Unreal Engine virtual production, innovative applications of AI tools in VFX, seamless motion capture integration, and sophisticated use of Blender
  • Prior experience working on content that aligns with Complex.com's unique style, tone, and target audience
  • Familiarity with other industry-standard VFX and animation software such as Autodesk Maya, SideFX Houdini, Foundry Nuke, Substance Suite, Maxon ZBrush, and Adobe Creative Cloud

  • Solid understanding of color management principles and ACES workflows
  • Scripting abilities (e.g., Python for Blender, Unreal Engine, or general pipeline tool development)
