Job Responsibility:
Provides veterinary care to research animals
Inspecting research animals housed by URMC
Monitoring health status of research animals
Evaluate and implement a diagnosis and treatment plan for sick or injured animals
Participate in collecting biological samples on a variety of species
Provide routine care, such as vaccinations and parasite control
Keep detailed and accurate records of health evaluations and surgical procedures
Participate in the training of others biomethodology and required skills
Working in the area of the rodent health-monitoring program
Performing various diagnostic procedures
Emergency duties required during adverse weather and/or other emergency situations
Provides direct primate research support at the professional level and takes charge of the health and safety of a primate colony
Prepares, monitors and recovers primates during anesthesia and paralysis for adaptive optics imaging
Responsible for the health of a non-human primate colony (marmosets)
Ensures primates are comfortable with colony and acclimated to performing behavioral experiments with primates
May help in training primates in specific behavioral tasks
Insures that health and safety practices are maintained in accordance with University policy and the law
Coordinates purchasing for non-human primate research: repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies and research materials and minor construction
May recommend expenditures for laboratory equipment and authorize expenditures for expendable supplies
Designs or collaborates in designing research equipment
Evaluates the performance of research equipment, making or recommending correctional design changes or developing new approaches for its use
Requirements:
Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology required
Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology preferred
Four years as a practicing licensed veterinary technician with extensive surgical and anesthetic experience preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience in a biomedical research facility preferred
Knowledge of Federal and State Animal Welfare Regulations and current veterinary care standards required by AAALAC, International and NIH preferred
Current NY state professional license as a veterinary technician required
