Job Description:

Are you passionate about shaping the future of design systems and building tools that empower makers? Join the Fluent Design System team as we create the next generation of Microsoft’s design system for M365—one that goes beyond pixels and patterns to embrace natural language, design logic, and AI-driven experiences. We’re entering a new era where UX engineering skills are more critical than ever. Design systems are evolving to include prompt and context engineering, model-first paradigms, and generative AI tooling. This role is your opportunity to help define those standards and prototype the future of human-computer interaction in an age of conversational design.

Job Responsibility:

  • Build the future of design systems: Help establish new, model-first design paradigms and standards that scale across Microsoft 365
  • Prototype next-gen interactions: Explore and validate new ways people and AI collaborate—beyond screens and clicks—through rapid prototyping
  • Create tools for makers: Develop innovative tools and workflows that leverage generative AI to accelerate design and engineering
  • Bridge design and engineering: Translate design intent into high-quality, interactive experiences that feel seamless and human
  • Collaborate deeply: Work alongside designers, researchers, and engineers to push the boundaries of what’s possible

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Graphic Design, Product Design, Visual Design, Human Computer Interaction or related field AND 2+ years experience working in product or service design and/or shipping production code OR equivalent experience
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Nice to have:

  • 4+ years of experience in UX engineering, front-end development, or related fields—or equivalent expertise
  • Experience with web technologies: TypeScript, React/Next.js, HTML, CSS/SCSS
  • Solid prototyping, coding, debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Solid communication skills and experience working cross-functionally
  • Ability to effectively work on cross functional teams with Design, Research, Engineering, and PM
  • GitHub, CodePen, or other links showcasing coding skills OR portfolio is required
  • Experience with design systems at scale
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts or Microsoft Azure services
  • Passion for human-computer interaction and emerging design paradigms
  • Experience with Figma and other design software
