Job Description

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has an exciting opportunity for an Underwriting Technician to join the Canadian Casualty team based in our Toronto office. The Underwriting Technician (UT) will play a critical role in supporting the Canada Casualty team in Toronto and Calgary. The individual will perform tasks to directly support the underwriting process, including but not limited to information collection, analysis, pre-quote process, policy binding and post-binding transactions. The Underwriting Technician will also support our Casualty team with operational support, as well as our external partners.

Job Responsibility

  • Support underwriters with all activities related to account development and management of submissions
  • Maintain underwriting files and ensure file integrity
  • Correspond with brokers, follow-up on outstanding information
  • Coordinate policy issuance and liaise with Operations team
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity

Requirements

  • Minimum 3-5 years professional experience
  • Strong administrative, analytical and communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Self-starter
  • ability to support and build workflow and process
  • Strong attention to detail, customer service and problem-solving skills
  • High organizational and time management skills
  • Strong competency in MS Office applications
  • Must be proactive and able to work within a team environment

  • Assist with new case and renewal set up in ESL Office (Employer Stop Loss Software) including uploading documents, importing census data/reports, loading Terms and Benefits to be quoted and completing the Competitive Analysis information
  • Interface and liaise with remote underwriting support team to ensure consistent, accurate and timely entries. The position will provide backup up support for the remote team as needed, assist in training and respond to inquiries. UT will perform peer review of other UT work prior to release of official documents
  • Obtain additional information from producers that is necessary to complete underwriting process
  • Prepare census in appropriate format for upload into the Gradient/ SAIL Voyager Platform to assist in the underwriting process
  • Assist Medical Risk Consultants with upload of clinical reviews in ESL Office (Employer Stop Loss Software)
  • Ensure proposal contingencies are satisfactorily met prior to acceptance of risk and issuance of policy
  • Prepare Stop Loss Applications and Policies for delivery to producer and the sales team
  • Review Plan Documents, census reports, and aggregate reports for completeness and to ensure they properly reflect the risk we agree to accept
  • Run reports for underwriters and management as requested
