Job Description:

Robert Half is partnering with a well-regarded organization in West Des Moines, Iowa to hire an Underwriter I on a contract-to-permanent basis. This opportunity is well-suited for someone with strong customer service experience who is interested in building a long-term career in the insurance industry. While an insurance license is not required to start, candidates must be willing to obtain their Property & Casualty license and demonstrate curiosity, accountability, and a desire to learn underwriting fundamentals.

Job Responsibility:

  • Assist with underwriting support by reviewing and organizing new business submissions and renewal requests
  • Evaluate account details and identify potential risks by following established underwriting guidelines and procedures
  • Generate and distribute quotes and related documentation, ensuring accuracy and completeness
  • Support underwriting decisions by gathering information, flagging discrepancies, and escalating items as appropriate
  • Provide ongoing account servicing support, including assisting with changes, renewals, and general inquiries
  • Communicate professionally with internal teams and carrier partners to ensure smooth workflows and timely responses

Requirements:

  • Customer service experience (required), ideally in a fast-paced or high-volume environment
  • Strong interest in entering the insurance field and building a career in underwriting
  • Willingness to obtain a Property & Casualty insurance license
  • High attention to detail with the ability to follow processes and guidelines closely
  • Ability to learn independently, apply feedback, and adapt to new concepts
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable managing multiple tasks while meeting deadlines

  • Accountability for ensuring strong analysis of the assigned Real estate portfolio ensuring consistencies with industry leading practices and compliance with all internal risk policies, standards and procedures
  • Interface with and support bankers in underwriting requests for commercial credit extensions for new and existing clients with ownership responsibilities for sound credit decisions and compliance with internal procedures/credit risk policy guidelines and standards
  • Adoption of leading practices in credit analysis, underwriting, and monitoring, including the end-to-end underwriting process, from early origination discussions to development of credit approval memos, and senior approval forums
  • Supervise analysts and associates to perform periodic monitoring of the portfolio
  • Ensure maintenance of organized credit files for credit, regulatory, and compliance purposes and ensuring compliance with WCR policies and processes
  • Perform quality control of the approval memos to ensure accuracy and completeness of input
  • Ensures team monitors the ongoing compliance of assigned deals with the documented financing terms and conditions, portfolio performance and financial triggers and makes appropriate recommendations with the aim of identifying and mitigating credit risks
  • Ensure ongoing and timely feedback and coaching of junior team to sustain a strong credit culture and an unwavering commitment to excellence in analysis and execution
  • Provide support to Director and other senior team members, lead projects and initiatives in the wider team
