Trial Attorney – Medical Malpractice Defense

Job Responsibility

  • Independently manage a full lifecycle caseload of medical malpractice and healthcare liability matters from intake through resolution
  • Serve as first-chair or senior second-chair trial counsel in jury trials, arbitrations, and mediations
  • Conduct and defend expert and fact witness depositions, including treating physicians and retained medical experts
  • Develop and execute case strategy, including liability, causation, and damages analysis in complex medical scenarios
  • Draft and argue dispositive motions, motions in limine, and Daubert/Frye challenges to expert testimony
  • Retain, prepare, and collaborate with medical experts across specialties
  • Participate in client development and relationship management, including insurer and healthcare system clients
  • Mentor junior attorneys and contribute to overall practice group development

Requirements

  • 5+ years of civil litigation experience, with significant exposure to medical malpractice, healthcare liability, or complex defense litigation
  • Demonstrated trial experience, including meaningful first-chair or advanced second-chair responsibilities in jury trials
  • Advanced experience taking and defending physician, expert, and 30(b)(6) depositions
  • Strong command of medical-legal concepts, including standard of care, causation, and damages modeling in healthcare litigation
  • Proven ability to work with and challenge expert testimony across medical specialties
  • Excellent legal writing, oral advocacy, and case strategy development skills
  • Ability to independently manage a high-value, complex caseload with minimal supervision
  • Strong client-facing skills with the ability to build trust with physicians, hospital administrators, and insurance carriers
  • Active admission to the Oregon Bar is required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing civil litigation
  • Background in defense litigation, insurance defense, or liability matters is required
  • Experience handling depositions, including preparing witnesses and defending testimony
  • Strong legal writing skills with the ability to prepare motions, briefs, and other court submissions
  • Demonstrated ability to support cases through discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school is required
