Job Description

Finance’s mission is to help support Shopify’s growth over the long-term and ensure we achieve our objective of making commerce better for everyone. We are trusted advisors and growth partners to the business, always striving to learn, provide insights, solve complex problems and contribute positive impact. Finance plays an important role at the strategic planning table and directly influences the future direction of Shopify. We are expanding the Treasury function to support the rapid evolution of our financial products. This is a Treasury role, focused on Product Money Flows rather than Corporate Cash Management. You will be responsible for the building, maintaining and operating the Treasury infrastructure that seamlessly moves money through the Shopify ecosystem powering global commerce. We’re looking for an expert to manage complex payment flows, safeguard merchant funds, and provide real-time liquidity insights. We are seeking talented Finance individuals who, in addition to the above, have a passion for learning and leveraging technologies such as SQL, Python and AI to drive impactful data analysis and transform our financial processes. We think of Shopify as a crafter-centric company where meetings come second to getting shit done. If you are an enthusiastic professional who’s looking to drive outcomes, and build what a best-in-class payments treasury function looks like, we would love to have you on board.

Job Responsibility

  • Building product-facing treasury operations, from managing money movement to facilitating merchant payouts
  • Managing liquidity risk across our regulated and unregulated entities, including intraday cash positioning, working capital optimization, and float forecasting at scale
  • Having a lead role on our banking relationships and negotiating account structures, reserve requirements, and settlement terms with acquiring banks, custodial institutions, and payment processors
  • Collaborating on risk management and compliance frameworks that ensure merchant funds are always protected, including reserve policies and supporting SOX controls
  • Partnering with Finance Engineering, Product, and R&D teams to build the systems and automated processes that will scale with our merchants’ growth
  • Developing actionable management reporting, dashboards, and KPIs to track the health of our payment operations and drive business success
  • Communicating complex financial and payment system concepts in a clear and accessible manner to various stakeholders, from engineers to executives

Requirements

  • Experience in Treasury, with a proven track record in payment operations or merchant fund treasury at a payments company, neo-bank, fintech, marketplace or other e-money transmitter licensed organization
  • Deep expertise in payment flows, card network operations, settlement mechanics, and BIN sponsorship
  • A builder’s mentality and a proven history of effective execution, especially creating processes and systems from scratch in fast-moving, ambiguous environments
  • Experience creating and managing relationships with financial institutions and negotiating complex service agreements
  • Strong ability to leverage AI tooling and data to drive decisions
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-moving, ambiguous work environment and to navigate through change
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, business partnering expertise, and an excellent ability to mentor and teach
  • Familiarity with Treasury Management Systems (like Modern Treasury) and multi-currency FX management is a plus
  • Background at a regulated payments entity: you understand MTL compliance, trust account mechanics, and what happens when float is mismanaged
