Job Description

Monitor the real-time operation of the high voltage transmission system (up to 500 kV) to ensure that members receive a continuous flow of reliable high quality power. Monitors internal and external influences and adjusts the performance characteristics of the system to compensate for and take advantage of changing conditions. Ensures quality real-time information is available for internal and external users to understand performance issues and accurately bill customers. Ensures member interests and needs are represented to and addressed, in a timely and cost-effective manner, by outside agencies. This position is responsible for complying with the NERC reliability standards and performs the duties that can determine GSOC's compliance with the NERC reliability standards. This position has the authority to shed load to maintain the integrity of the BES, or to correct a generation capacity deficiency.

Job Responsibility

  • Operate the Energy Control System to detect and avert station overload, equipment damage, and voltage fluctuations
  • Maintain and enhance system stability
  • Continuously monitor weather and system conditions
  • Perform contingency planning and initiate corrective action
  • Plan, analyze, authorize, and control scheduled operation of system equipment
  • Write and issue switching orders and clearances on network and non-network devices
  • Perform real-time data quality assurance
  • Authorize, schedule and dispatch manpower to perform repairs
  • Direct the isolation of system failure and the safe and efficient restoration of power
  • Perform fault analysis
  • Deliver oral and written presentations and reports that alert senior management to ongoing trends and activities

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • Six years' transmission operations or construction experience
  • Two years control center related experience
  • Must be NERC certified (TO, BIT or RC)
  • AC/DC theory
  • Blueprint reading
  • Excel/MS Word experience
  • Must have sound decision making ability under stressful conditions
  • Must be able to communicate effectively
  • Must handle multiple tasks

  • Develop and maintain the system models for transmission studies including collection, review and/or modification of a variety of electric system parameters: equipment ratings, impedances, contingency sets, protection and control parameters, as well as system topology
  • Conducts adequacy assessments and develop options to meet delivery objectives with latitude for independent action and decision making. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, transient stability, short circuit, and electromagnetic transients. Identifies key technical issues and develops solutions
  • Responsible to understand, interpret and apply industry and corporate transmission planning standards and the regulations of Federal, State and Local authorities
  • Represents the department and the company on various industry related committees
  • Participates with other utilities and the planning staff of the Independent System Operator (ISO) in the preparation of regional transmission expansion studies
