Job Description:

Semi-skilled manual work in the maintenance and construction of roads and utilities for the Engineering Operations Division.

Job Responsibility:

  • Assist the Chargehand with tasks assigned to crews
  • Prepare for sidewalk installation and paving
  • Lay and align pipes for water, sewer, and storm systems according to grade and specifications
  • Prepare trenches and bedding for installation
  • Backfill trenches after pipe installation
  • Inspect pipes for defects
  • Ensure proper sealing and jointing
  • Operate and maintain hand tools and small equipment safely
  • Follow all safety procedures
  • Act as point of contact for crew and site management when Chargehand is absent
  • Assign daily tasks based on project priorities
  • Monitor work quality and compliance with specifications and safety standards
  • Report progress and issues to the site supervisor
  • Ensure proper documentation of completed work and any plan changes

Requirements:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by technical courses related to the work
  • Considerable knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in public works operations
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently when required
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures and compliance standards
  • Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s license
  • Previous construction-related and supervisory experience
  • EOCP Water Distribution System Operator Certification level 1 (desirable)
  • Wastewater collection System Operator Certification level 1 (desirable)
