Job Description

The town of Norton (population approx. 20,000) is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to serve as its next Town Accountant. This position oversees all municipal accounting systems and financial reporting functions, including maintenance of the general ledger, financial reporting, and compliance with Massachusetts General Laws, Department of Revenue (DLS) guidance, and municipal finance best practices. The position plays a key role in supporting and maintaining the town's strong financial position and advancing long-term fiscal stability.

Job Responsibility

  • Maintain and oversee the town's general ledger and financial records
  • Review and approve expenditures and warrants
  • Prepare financial reports and assist with budget development and monitoring
  • Ensure compliance with state and local financial regulations and reporting requirements
  • Coordinate year-end closing and support audit processes
  • Provide financial guidance to departments and leadership

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field (master's preferred)
  • Municipal accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts municipal finance laws and DLS requirements
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced municipal environment
