Full time fixed term contract until 31st August 2026. As a Tobacco dependency advisor, you will be responsible for supporting patients who have been identified as smokers, to not smoke whilst they are in hospital, by advising on what treatment is appropriate for them, and referring them to the community stop smoking service after discharge. You will also support staff who want to stop smoking. As a tobacco dependency advisor, you will also engage with clinical staff to inform them on the stop smoking service, what support is available for patients and the promotion of the smokefree hospital site.
Job Responsibility:
Deliver tobacco harm reduction (smoking cessation) assessments, advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications and e-cigarettes, working within recommended protocols and guidelines
Develop individually tailored support plans including recommending treatments based on assessed needs
Provide information to people about stopping smoking, minimizing harm from tobacco and health-related issues in line with best guidance and protocols
Support patients who have been identified as smokers, to not smoke whilst they are in hospital
Advise on what treatment is appropriate for them
Refer patients to the community stop smoking service after discharge
Support staff who want to stop smoking
Engage with clinical staff to inform them on the stop smoking service, what support is available for patients and the promotion of the smokefree hospital site
Requirements:
Experience of working in the NHS in the community or hospital setting
Experience of providing healthcare, healthcare advice or health promotion advice to patients or members of the public
Knowledge of evidence based smoking cessation initiatives
Good knowledge and understanding of evidence based practice in smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking and the benefits of quitting
Understand and maintain confidentiality issues
Educated to GCSE (or equivalent) grade 4 or above in English and Maths
NVQ level 3 in Health care (or equivalent)
Smoking Cessation Training Level 2 or willing to undertake within 3 months of starting in post
Nice to have:
Experience of providing help, support and/or counselling on a one to one or group basis
Experience of using clinical systems
Understanding of audit and evaluation
Knowledge of principles of health promotion and issues of health inequality
Specific training in health promotion interventions
