Job Description:

We are looking for a Test Bay Engineer who will be responsible for programming, testing, and commissioning protection and control panels for power systems, including Generator Protection, Generator Excitation, Transformer Protection, Feeder Protection, Bus Protection, and Line Protection Systems. This role ensures that multi-function relays and associated control panels operate reliably and according to user specifications. The position works closely with Operations and Project Management teams to support engineering and site services activities. This is an on-site position based in Markham, Ontario.

Job Responsibility:

  • Analyze project specifications to understand protection and control panel designs, including single-line diagrams, schematic diagrams, logic/control diagrams, wiring drawings, wire lists, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Prepare customized test plans to validate that multi-function protection relays operate correctly in safeguarding the power system
  • Create relay setting files based on logic diagrams and coordination/protection study reports
  • Upload setting files and configure communications, including IEC 61850 protocols
  • Execute test plans using secondary injection tests and simulate complex control schemes such as transfer schemes, synchronizing schemes, and auto-restoration schemes
  • Take full responsibility for assigned projects, with support from senior engineering team members as needed
  • Perform testing of customized protection and control solutions in-house and at project sites
  • Provide field support up to and including commissioning of new applications
  • Mentor team members, provide peer review, and support training initiatives

Requirements:

  • University degree or College diploma in Electrical Engineering
  • 3–5 years of experience in relay testing and creation of setting files for multi-function relays
  • Strong knowledge of power systems, protection schemes, and communication applications
  • Experience developing test procedures and maintenance procedures for factory and site testing/commissioning of protection panels
  • Experience working with industry-standard protection relay platforms
  • Excellent understanding of protection principles, including Distance, Line Differential, Transformer Differential, Bus, Feeder, Generator, and Large Motor protection
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, and mentor team members
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and multicultural collaboration skills
  • Customer-focused mindset

Nice to have:

  • Experience in turnkey protection and control projects
  • Proven record in developing protection and control applications
  • Working knowledge of major relay testing equipment and associated software
  • Familiarity with electrical utility standard work and documentation procedures
  • Interdisciplinary experience including metering, communications, substation automation, and integration
  • Lean / Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification preferred
  • P.Eng certification is an asset
