The mission of the Test & Approvals Engineer is to plan, execute, and manage fire and performance testing of our passive fire protection and insulation systems to support product development, system validation, and regulatory compliance. This role serves as a technical authority for fire testing programs, ensuring our products meet applicable codes, standards, and certification requirements while delivering reliable, compliant solutions to the market. The Test & Approvals Engineer plays a critical role in advancing new product development, maintaining existing approvals, and partnering with internal and external stakeholders—including testing laboratories, certification bodies, and engineering teams—to ensure the successful performance of our fire‑resistive systems. This role is critical to enabling market access, supporting technical credibility, and accelerating commercialization.
Job Responsibility
Define and execute test programs aligned with U.S. applicable standards (UL, ASTM, NFPA, ISO, IBC, FM)
Coordinate with external labs (e.g., UL Solutions) for fire, movement, and system testing
Prepare test specimens, drawings, and documentation packages for submittal
Witness and manage testing campaigns to ensure successful outcomes
Develop and execute a replication strategy from European-tested systems to U.S. listings as strategically suitable
Generate a database and maintain listing system designs
Translate test results into engineered system designs and listings
Develop installation details, system drawings, and technical documentation
Ensure alignment between test configurations and real-world applications (pipes, cables, joints, curtain wall interfaces) in coordination with Product Management
Work closely with Product Management, Sales, and other relevant functions to translate approvals into commercial offerings
Support the technical sales/specification team with system selection and technical guidance
Provide input to R&D on material behavior and system optimization
Build, manage, and ensure a consistent, continued, test pipeline targeting defined application objectives
Develop "what-if" strategies for test results to ensure results in a timely manner
Maintain working knowledge of IBC requirements for firestopping
Maintain working knowledge of NFPA 70
Maintain working knowledge of ASTM passive fire protection relevant standards
Ensure all systems meet regulatory and code compliance requirements
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline
5+ years of experience in fire testing, product testing, or technical engineering, preferably involving passive fire protection or building materials
Understanding of fire testing standards and codes (e.g., ASTM E84, E1354, E814/UL 1479, ASTM E1966/UL 2079, ASTM E2307, ASTM E119, UL 1703, UL 263, NFPA, IBC)
Experience working with third party testing laboratories and certification bodies
Ability to perform and interpret test data, drawings, and standards to evaluate system performance (basic use of CAD software is needed)
Strong technical writing skills for preparation of test documentation and reports
Excellent analytical, problem solving, planning, and communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross functional environment
Willingness to travel up to 40% for witnessed tests, laboratory coordination, and stakeholder meetings domestically and internationally
Nice to have
Direct experience with passive fire protection systems, fire rated assemblies, or fire resistive materials
Familiarity with insulation systems for building and industrial applications
Familiarity with MEP and HVAC installation details
