The Technician Specialist is part of the Specialty Catalyst Process Technology team. They work at Grace corporate headquarters in Columbia, MD and are a hands-on pilot scale operations contributor, supporting the small-scale development of catalysts and intermediates, which are essential to produce polyethylene and polypropylene. A typical day includes safe handling of hazardous chemicals (sometimes wearing a respirator and other required personal protective equipment), operation of lab and pilot equipment, while using varying types of material conveyance systems (forklift, hand truck, etc.). The Technician Specialist works a rotating shift schedule (often twelve-hour shifts), along with occasional overtime. They rotate between several operating units within the group, mostly in Columbia, MD but occasionally in Curtis Bay, MD. The Technician Specialist is an on-site role in Columbia, MD.
Job Responsibility:
Work flexible, rotating shifts, weekends, and evenings as necessary
Maintain flexibility in scheduling and collaborate with coworkers to foster a safe, engaged, and productive environment
Work independently as a member of the team
Attend commercial plant trials at other Grace locations
Extract samples of pilot plant material, troubleshoot, diagnose and solve technical problems
Safely handle, store, and transport chemicals, including potentially hazardous chemicals and various organic and air sensitive materials
Support development of technically oriented materials and documents
Draft plant data sheets, environmental or incident reports, inventory sheets, process operating instructions, Job Safety Analysis forms, waste logs
Complete all applicable Operator Training and Certification tests and maintain compliance with corporate and group safety initiatives
Demonstrate enhanced accountability and ownership of processes and equipment
Requirements:
High School diploma
Ability and willingness to become a certified forklift driver
Demonstrated mechanical experience with equipment set-up and minor maintenance
Experience understanding technical documents
Experience with various computers systems, navigate and utilize MS Office
Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant environment with highly hazardous materials
Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs
Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, full face respirator (when necessary but not daily), long sleeves and pants
Nice to have:
Associates degree or two years of college with course work in chemistry, engineering and / or math
Experience in handling pyrophoric and/or organic materials
Experience reading and understanding technical documents and participating in new process startups
