We are looking for an experienced and technically competent Technical Supervisor to lead the day-to-day supervision of laboratory and site-based materials testing operations. This roles ensures all testing is conducted accurately, efficiently, and in full compliance with industry standards, company procedures, and regulatory requirements. As the technical lead within the team, you will oversee technicians, provide guidance on testing procedures, ensure accurate reporting, and uphold quality standards—playing a key role in maintaining accreditation (e.g., UKAS) and supporting continuous improvement across materials testing processes.
Job Responsibility:
Supervise and coordinate the activities of materials technicians in both laboratory and field environments
Ensure all testing of concrete, soils, aggregates and asphalt is carried out in accordance with relevant standards and internal protocols
Act as a technical authority and point of escalation for troubleshooting, complex testing, or procedural queries
Review, approve, and validate test reports and data before submission to clients or internal stakeholders
Monitor workload and resources, assigning tasks to ensure deadlines and service levels are met
Support training, mentoring, and competency assessments of junior staff and new technicians
Assist in maintaining laboratory quality systems, including UKAS accreditation, calibration, traceability, and documentation control
Conduct internal audits, risk assessments, and participate in external audits (e.g. UKAS, client QA visits)
Ensure health, safety, and environmental compliance in all testing activities and promote a culture of safety awareness
Liaise with operational managers and clients to understand testing requirements and deliver high-quality service
Identify and implement improvements in processes, equipment, and systems
Ensure all work complies with health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures
Requirements:
Relevant qualification in Construction Materials Testing or a related field (e.g. HNC/HND, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent experience
Strong experience in a materials testing role, ideally with supervisory or senior-level responsibilities
Sound knowledge of testing standards and methods (BS, EN, ASTM, ISO)
Experience working in a UKAS-accredited laboratory (or similar accreditation) is highly desirable
Proficient in using testing equipment and tools for laboratory and field tests
Valid UK driving licence essential for site-based work
Strong technical and analytical skills
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
High level of organisation and time management
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong understanding of health & safety procedures in lab and site environments
