Our client, a leading Melbourne-based Victorian University, is seeking a highly skilled Technical Officer to join their STEM College at the Bundoora East campus. This is a crucial contingent role focused on supporting high-level teaching, research, and industry engagement within their Mechanical Engineering and Materials Testing laboratories.
Job Responsibility:
Hands-on Testing: Provide technical support for compression, tension, and shear testing (often to failure)
Infrastructure Management: Maintain and operate load frames, hydraulic systems, actuators, and data acquisition systems
Safety & Compliance: Manage laboratory governance, including SOPs, risk assessments, and OH&S legislation compliance
User Support: Induct and assist academic staff and HDR students with specimen preparation and test setups
Maintenance: Oversee equipment calibration, fault diagnosis, and preventative maintenance schedules
Requirements:
Proven background in operating structural/mechanical testing equipment within research, industry, or tertiary sectors
Strong problem-solving skills related to hydraulic and instrumentation systems
Deep understanding of laboratory safety and risk management frameworks
Ability to provide expert advice to diverse stakeholders, from students to industry partners
A valid Working with Children Check (WWCC)
Degree-level Engineering qualification (or higher) with relevant experience OR Trade Qualification (Cert III or higher) with extensive specialist experience in mechanical, electrical, or industrial fields

An Electrical trade qualification is highly desirable
