Job Description

Reporting to the Technical Coordinator, the Technical Officer provides high-quality technical support for Chemistry & Life Sciences teaching labs (and occasional research labs) at our City-based university client. This hands-on role ensures the safe and effective delivery of laboratory classes by preparing solutions, setting up/packing down equipment, routine instrument calibration, and day-to-day laboratory housekeeping. You will also assist in maintaining key laboratory documentation and ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements.

Job Responsibility

  • Lead technical preparation and set-up of Chemistry and Life Sciences practical classes, including reagent preparation, ensuring all equipment and spaces are ready for use, and managing subsequent pack-down and reset
  • Provide essential day-to-day technical support, including the operation, routine maintenance, calibration, and first-line troubleshooting of common laboratory equipment (e.g., balances, spectrophotometers)
  • Maintain laboratory safety and compliance by managing chemical/consumable inventories, assisting with OHS processes, safe chemical handling, waste disposal, and maintaining necessary documentation (SOPs, risk documentation, registers)
  • Demonstrate strong personal accountability and client-focused service to meet teaching schedules and contribute positively to the technical team

Requirements

  • Proven experience in a Chemistry laboratory setting, ideally within education, including preparing reagents and managing class set-up/pack-down
  • Demonstrated competence in operating, maintaining, and performing basic troubleshooting on standard laboratory equipment
  • Strong commitment to laboratory safety, compliance, and OHS practices, including chemical and waste management
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with a client-focused approach to meet teaching deadlines
  • Degree or higher qualification in Chemistry with relevant experience
  • A valid Working with Children Check is mandatory

  • Conduct Microbiological analysis on raw materials, initial, in-process and final products, and samples collected from the environmental monitoring programs at manufacturing facility
  • Testing as required supporting Endotoxin testing, Bioburden analysis, microbial identifications, biological indicators, growth promotion, water
  • Will be required to read microbial plates and interpret test results
  • Perform microbial and particulate monitoring of clean rooms throughout the facility. May be responsible for overseeing daily workflow of assigned area
  • Performs weekly Real Time Risk Assessments (RTRA) to identify potential contamination issues in cleanrooms
  • Perform equipment maintenance and calibrations as required
  • Maintain regulatory compliance through established programs for lab testing, training, SOPs, and validation
  • Write and execute validations for manufacturing processes and laboratory instruments and methods
