My university client is seeking an experienced and motivated Technical Officer to join their Geotechnical Laboratory within the Materials, Process, Civil & Infrastructure (MPCI) Technical Services team. This position supports high-impact teaching and research across soil mechanics, foundation engineering and sustainable infrastructure. This is a hands-on, laboratory-based role ideal for someone who enjoys practical problem solving, supporting academics and students, and working with specialised testing equipment.
Job Responsibility:
Conduct geotechnical and soil testing, including sample preparation and operation of triaxial, consolidation, permeability and direct shear testing systems
Support academics and researchers with experiment design, data collection and method development
Perform calibration, routine maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments
Develop and update laboratory documentation (SOPs, risk assessments, maintenance schedules)
Maintain a safe working environment and ensure compliance with university safety standards
Contribute to improvements in testing capabilities, lab operations and automation initiatives
Requirements:
Practical experience in geotechnical or civil engineering laboratory environments
Strong technical skills in soil and materials testing and instrumentation
Ability to support teaching and/or research activities in a university or industry setting
Excellent communication skills and a proactive, safety-focused mindset
Relevant qualification in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, or equivalent technical experience
