Sensory-First Approach: Help manage the environment to reduce sensory overload, ensuring students feel safe and ready to learn. Specialised Communication: Gain or use experience with PECS, Makaton, and Visual Timetables to facilitate meaningful interaction. Your Role as an ASC Champion As an Autism Support Assistant, you are the student's guide to the social and academic world, providing the scaffolding they need to thrive. Promoting Predictability: Use visual schedules and "now and next" boards to reduce anxiety and help students manage transitions between activities. Supportive Interventions: Work 1:1 to deliver personalised learning tasks that align with the student's specific interests and EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) goals. Managing "Meltdowns" with Empathy: Recognise the early signs of sensory or emotional deregulation and implement calming strategies or "masking" breaks before a crisis occurs. Social Coaching: Facilitate structured play or social interactions, helping students develop the tools they need to build friendships and work alongside peers.
