We are looking for an experienced indirect tax specialist to lead indirect tax activities for our client's North American operations. This role is responsible for overseeing sales and use tax compliance, strengthening reporting accuracy, and advising internal teams on tax-related matters across multiple jurisdictions. The position also plays an important part in audit management, process oversight, and identifying opportunities to improve tax efficiency and compliance practices.
Job Responsibility
Oversee the preparation, review, and timely filing of sales and use tax returns, related accruals, and tax payments on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
Track tax payment activity, coordinate disbursement requests, and analyze fluctuations against budget expectations to explain variances clearly
Complete general ledger account reconciliations and prepare journal entries that support accurate indirect tax reporting each month
Administer exemption documentation, refund claims, exception processing, and amended filings to maintain compliance across jurisdictions
Lead responses to state and local sales and use tax examinations, including reverse audits, and manage communication with taxing authorities throughout the audit cycle
Research indirect tax rules and develop well-supported positions while identifying practical opportunities for tax recovery or savings
Serve as a subject matter resource for internal stakeholders by providing guidance on sales and use tax matters and maintaining current tax procedures and policies
Support Canadian indirect tax compliance activities, including Harmonized Sales Tax, Goods and Services Tax, and Provincial Sales Tax obligations
Maintain and optimize tax determination technology, including Thomson Reuters OneSource Indirect Tax Determination, to support accurate tax treatment and reporting
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a closely related discipline
At least 5 years of experience in accounting and corporate sales and use tax compliance
Minimum of 3 years of tax or accounting experience within a manufacturing environment
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a collaborative team setting
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with leadership, auditors, consultants, and cross-functional partners
Advanced analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project coordination capabilities
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and experience working with indirect tax or compliance software
Willingness to support Canadian indirect tax compliance and travel up to 10% as needed
