Job Description:

Fugro’s innovative Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs) are transforming the maritime industry—enabling safer, more sustainable operations for subsea inspections, seafloor mapping, and environmental monitoring. By leveraging our USVs, clients reduce operational costs, minimize human risk, and lower CO₂ emissions. We are looking for a Software Systems Engineer to join our governance team. In this pivotal role, you will ensure the reliability, interoperability and safety of our vessel control and autonomy software. You’ll design future integrations for vessel automation and ensure all uncrewed vessels can be operated seamlessly from a unified remote operations centre.

Job Responsibility:

  • Design integrations for vessel- or job-specific automations that align with Fugro’s integration standards
  • Maintain structured documentation of vessel control designs to support engineering, certification, and classification processes
  • Define data exchange structures and protocols based on industry standards to maximize the value of our data-rich robotic platforms
  • Enable seamless integration with digital twin solutions
  • Develop verification schemas and example communication flows
  • Support modularization of software components and ensure proper functionality assignment

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Experience developing data and processing models
  • Familiarity with architectural patterns such as functional layers, microservices, and event-driven architecture
  • Experience with real-time communications and protocols such as MQTT, DDS, ModBus, CAN, OPC-UA
  • Understanding of SCADA systems, PLCs, IIoT, and distributed control systems
  • Strong communication and coordination skills
  • Proactive mindset with ownership and decision-making capabilities

Nice to have:

  • Experience with maritime or autonomous systems
  • Knowledge of high-availability systems
  • Familiarity with containerization (e.g., Docker) and cloud-based testing environments
What we offer:
  • 29 holidays per year based on full-time employment (including 4 appointed by Fugro management), with the option to purchase 12 additional days
  • Extensive career and training opportunities, both nationally and internationally
  • Flexible working hours and hybrid work options in alignment with your manager and corporate policies
  • Commuting allowance
  • Modern pension scheme
  • Collective health insurance
  • Access to our corporate fitness plan
  • Coaching and support through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
