The Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides executive clinical leadership to ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient care across patient services. Reporting to the Executive Vice President of Health Affairs, the CMO partners closely with physician, nursing, and executive leaders to advance clinical strategy and ensure excellence in patient care delivery. The CMO oversees inpatient clinical operations, including patient flow, capacity management, and transitions of care, and plays a central role in optimizing clinical performance and resource utilization. The role also has executive responsibility for Medical Professional Services, including credentialing, privileging, licensure, and enrollment of the medical staff. Working collaboratively with clinical and administrative leaders, the CMO supports medical staff governance, peer review, and quality oversight while helping advance care delivery across hospital, ambulatory, and satellite locations.
Job Responsibility:
Strategic Leadership: Partner with the Chief Nursing Officer to model the physician–nurse leadership dyad and drive clinical strategy execution
Serve as a physician liaison to Emergency Management and collaborate with the EVP for Health Affairs on enterprise clinical initiatives
Present clinical and operational updates to senior leadership and board committees
Clinical Operations & Performance: Lead the Inpatient Governance Committee to optimize patient flow, capacity management, and transitions of care
Partner with executive operations leadership to support the Patient Flow and Capacity Center and data-driven operational decision making
Collaborate with the Surgeon-in-Chief, Physician-in-Chief, ICU, OR, and ED leadership to improve bed utilization and patient throughput
Advance initiatives that strengthen care delivery across departments, divisions, programs, and centers
Quality, Safety & Compliance: Partner with the Chief Safety and Quality Officer to advance clinical quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance
Co-chair the Medical Staff Peer Review Committee and support the resolution of quality-of-care issues
Review clinical performance data, identify trends and gaps, and lead improvement initiatives
Clinical Governance & Medical Staff Administration: Oversee Medical Professional Services, including credentialing, privileging, licensure, and enrollment of medical staff
Develop and maintain clinical practice standards with senior physician leadership
Participate in key governance bodies including the Medical Staff Executive Committee and Board Credentialing Committee
Leadership & Collaboration: Provide leadership to Associate Chief Medical Officers supporting education, access, ambulatory and satellite services, program development, and critical care
Foster a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement
Strengthen relationships with referring providers and the broader medical community to support care coordination and patient access
Requirements:
MD
board-certified physician
10–15 years of progressive clinical and leadership experience
High level of demonstrated leadership skills necessary to advance and coordinate the achievement of organization objectives through the efforts of direct and indirect staff
Extensive working knowledge of clinical risk management and safety protocols
Proven ability to communicate effectively with internal and external constituents with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs, and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed
Demonstrated experience and success with healthcare operations and delivery at multiple levels
A servant leader, able to listen to and integrate the opinions of stakeholders to drive change and implement decisions
