A strategic and results-driven sustainability professional responsible for developing, implementing, and advancing sustainability initiatives across UNCW Dining Operations. This role supports Aramark’s Be Well. Do Well. sustainability platform while aligning with the University’s environmental priorities. The Sustainability Manager serves as a key liaison between Dining Services and the UNCW Sustainability Department, driving measurable impact through program management, operational integration, education, and stakeholder engagement. This position also plays a critical role in elevating program visibility through participation in awards, certifications, and recognition programs that highlight sustainability achievements and campus leadership.
Job Responsibility:
Lead and expand waste reduction strategies across residential and retail dining operations
Oversee and optimize programs including composting, recycling, food waste tracking, and donation initiatives
Monitor waste streams, analyze contamination trends, and implement corrective education and engagement strategies
Develop and promote circularity initiatives to reduce overall environmental impact
Strengthen partnerships with local farmers, producers, and sustainable suppliers
Track, report, and ensure compliance with local and sustainable purchasing goals aligned with university targets
Manage and grow key initiatives such as Feast Down East Mobile Market, on-site cultivation, and local vendor campaigns
Ensure compliance with Green Restaurant Association (GRA) standards
Partner with operations teams to implement energy and water conservation initiatives
Identify opportunities for sustainable improvements in facilities
Lead staff training on sustainability best practices
Serve as liaison between Dining Services, campus partners, and the community
Collaborate with departments and student organizations
Develop and evaluate sustainability programs with measurable outcomes
Manage budgets and supervise staff and student employees
Drive AASHE STARS performance (OP-7, OP-8)
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, environmental science, business, or a related field, with 1– 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrated leadership, with strong communication and project management skills
Proven ability to influence decision-making and collaborate across cross-functional teams
Experience managing operational budgets and tracking expenses
Ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed
Nice to have:
Experience in higher education or food service operations preferred
