Job Description

GRAEF’s Survey Services group has an excellent opportunity for a full-time SURVEY CREW CHIEF in our Milwaukee Headquarters office. We are seeking candidates who have a desire to work mainly in the field with occasional office work. Work is locally based, with occasional travel to be expected.

Job Responsibility

  • Being the lead on a one-person survey crew and supervise multi-person survey crews on various types of surveys, including boundary, topographic, construction staking, and as-built surveys
  • Operate and maintain survey equipment such as GPS, robotic total stations, data collectors, and levels
  • Interpret project plans, specifications, and control requirements to establish accurate survey data
  • Collect and record accurate field notes, sketches, and digital data for office processing
  • Ensure crew safety by following company and industry safety standards
  • Train and mentor crew members in field procedures and equipment use
  • Communicate with project managers, engineers, and clients to clarify project requirements and resolve field issues
  • Manage daily schedules, crew logistics, and field resources
  • Perform quality control checks to ensure accuracy and completeness of survey work
  • Maintain survey vehicles, tools, and equipment in good working condition

Requirements

  • Have or are in pursuit of an associates degree or bachelor’s degree in surveying, civil engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of field surveying experience with at least 1 year in a crew chief role
  • Proficiency with GPS, robotic total stations, and related survey instruments
  • Experience in AutoCAD and or MicroStation, Trimble Business Center
  • Working knowledge of Land Surveying data collection procedures
  • Strong understanding of survey fundamentals and principles, field procedures, and construction staking
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and legal descriptions
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions and terrain
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Nice to have

  • WisDOT project experience
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license or intent to pursue
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar drafting software
  • Knowledge of DOT, municipal, or utility survey standards

  • Assists in performing a subset of tasks for project planning including pricing, planning, estimation, and coordination of tasks for a project
  • Contacts and communicates with Clients, Project Managers, Surveyors, Geomaticist, Managers, and other stakeholders providing accurate data
  • Performs field surveying for various projects and ensures accuracy of data collected by the field crew
  • Performs moderately complex field calculations (such as calculating horizontal and vertical geometry of roadways or for construction stake outs), determines property boundaries, retraces and surveys boundary lines
  • Prepares finished grade sheets, topographic maps, records of survey, corner records, and other survey reports
  • Reviews field data, reports, and maps to ensure proper QA techniques, provides feedback and coaching back to project team
  • Conducts site visits ensuring proper QC standards are followed
  • Researches existing record information, including record maps, plans, deeds, easements, and right-of-way documents
  • and ensure maintenance of field data records
  • This position directly leads and mentors others while engaged in field surveying work
