Surgical Technologist First Assist position at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. The role involves providing first or second assisting for surgical procedures, performing scrub duties, preparing the surgical field, and maintaining a sterile environment. The position requires a high degree of schedule flexibility to support transplant surgeries that may arise during evenings, nights, or weekends.
Job Responsibility:
Provide first or second assisting for specified surgical procedures
Incise tissue
Provide surgical field exposure by providing retraction
Assist with maintaining a dry surgical field-hemostasis
Clamp, cauterize, and/or ligate bleeders
Assist with the identification of anatomical structures
Utilize surgical instruments for the purpose they were intended
Assist with or perform wound closure
Assist with or apply skin sutures, staples
Assist with or apply dressings
Provide assistance in preparation and maintenance of sterile O.R. environment utilizing aseptic techniques
Perform duties in the scrub role as assigned
Completely prepare sterile field in a timely manner
Perform surgical draping of incision site
Comply with departmental policy and procedures regarding specimens, counts, and disposition of contaminated instruments
Maintain sterile field and boundaries prior to and during procedure
Act as preceptor, sharing knowledge in a supportive/educational manner
Maintain on-call availability
Assist in emergency situations as assigned
Maintain a safe work environment according to regulatory agency standards
Maintain educational records and timecard
Maintain competencies
Prepare the surgical field and supplies/instruments delivered to the field
Assist in opening sterile supplies and instruments
Efficiently utilize supplies to avoid waste and decrease costs
Assist with patients of all ages with skin preparation
Verify instrument/supply/equipment available and ready per physician preference card
Verify specific needs of physician by completely reading scrub tips
Assist with positioning of the surgical patient as directed by the circulating nurse
Assist with clean-up and turnover upon completion of case
In collaboration with health care team, assist in providing for a cooperative work environment
Assist with maintaining goals of Surgical Services and Advocate
Share clinical and professional knowledge in a supportive/educational manner
Demonstrate self-direction in utilizing work time appropriately
Accept and complete team responsibilities as assigned

Requirements:
Graduation from an accredited surgical assistance program required
Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential required
Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider required
Current CST Certification required
Good communication skills
ability to independently perform scrub duties
Current professional state licensure under IDFPR
Ability to stand for long periods of time
Ability to lift 50 pounds
Ability to cooperate and work well with others
Ability to communicate with mask on and not facing others
Ability to work in a stressful, changing environment
Ability to respond quickly to emergencies
Ability to respond to fire and other codes (e.g., evacuate patients)
