Job Description

A surgical first assistant plays a vital role in a successful surgical procedure. They are primarily in charge of assisting surgeons, such as by arranging and handing over tools, holding open incisions, and dressing surgical wounds.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Completion of a Surgical Technician Program
  • NBSTSA Surgical First Assistant Certification required
  • Two years of Certified Surgical First Assistant experience in multiple specialties or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred
  • Able to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • General familiarity with medical terminology as it pertains to anatomy and surgical procedures in an operating room

  • Provides for timely room turnover, including cleansing of the surgical site, application of dressings, instrument breakdown and room decontamination
  • Assists with patient positioning, patient transport and assists with direct patient care as appropriate
  • Participates as a member of the emergency surgical team and responds to C-section call within 20 minutes from notification and OR call within 30 minutes from notification
  • Maintains accuracy of specialty instrument sets, restocks specialty carts and provides updates of physician preference cards
  • Maintains safe handling of equipment to prevent damage and loss. Marks and reports on broken/damaged instruments for replacement
  • Participates in preparation for cases, including pulling supplies and specialty equipment
  • Demonstrates a full knowledge of surgical procedures and functions as a member of specialty team
