Job Description

The following are specific guidelines for the functioning and responsibilities of Surgical Care Assistants assigned to the Operating Room/Post Anesthesia Care Unit/Preoperative Services.

Job Responsibility

  • Care of Scrub Areas and Clean Utility Rooms
  • Distribute processed instrument sets, equipment and supplies
  • Care of Special Surgical Equipment, Instruments and Supplies
  • Care of Soiled Utility Rooms
  • Damp dust storage shelves
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization of stock room
  • Routine specimens
  • Transport the pre-operative patient
  • Transport blood and or blood products
  • Clean stretcher with appropriate solution
  • Assist with maintaining cleanliness of the Operating Rooms and environment
  • Assist scrub and circulator with gathering and set up of supplies and equipment

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred

  • May perform specific validated competencies and surgical activities such as position and prep of patient on the surgical table, application of the tourniquet, securing of drains, application of the dressing, cast or immobilizer at the end of a case and safe transfer from the surgical table to transport cart/bed without supervision of the surgeon.
  • Provides competency confirmed by a sponsoring surgeon and submits documentation to the medical executive committee a minimum of every two years for approval and/or renewal.
