Job Description:

We are seeking a calm, patient, and dedicated Support Mentor to work with students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) across schools in Hailsham. This role functions similarly to a SEND Teaching Assistant, providing academic, emotional, and behavioural support to ensure pupils remain engaged, confident, and able to learn. You will play a key role in helping pupils feel safe, understood, and supported throughout the school day, working closely with teachers and other staff to promote positive outcomes for each child.

Job Responsibility:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and other SEND needs
  • Offer calm and supportive guidance to help pupils manage their emotions and behaviour
  • Promote self-regulation, resilience, and confidence through positive mentoring
  • Support teachers in creating an inclusive and structured learning environment
  • Build trusting relationships with pupils to encourage consistent engagement
  • Record observations and contribute to individual support plans
  • Assist with classroom routines, learning tasks, and tailored activities
  • Work collaboratively with staff, parents, and external professionals to ensure cohesive support

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally within SEND or pastoral support
  • Strong communication skills, patience, and emotional resilience
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive when faced with challenging situations
  • A flexible, proactive approach suitable for a cover-based role
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (preferred)
  • Knowledge of SEND strategies, emotional regulation, or restorative approaches (preferred)
  • Experience within mainstream or specialist educational settings (preferred)
