Job Description:

The Supervising Attorney is a leadership role within the Legal Department, responsible for overseeing the work of housing attorneys handling individual housing matters. In addition to supervisory duties, the Supervising Attorney will maintain a small independent caseload.

Job Responsibility:

  • Provide support and mentorship to staff attorneys, including in-court supervision and case review
  • Offer document review and ad hoc legal support
  • Assist attorneys working under housing contracts
  • Set and enforce expectations around case strategy, litigation schedules, documentation, and best practices
  • Coordinate trial dates in collaboration with other supervisory staff
  • Second-seat new attorneys at motions and trials
  • Troubleshoot housing court issues and serve as a resource for legal guidance
  • Support the professional development of junior attorneys
  • Lead and participate in group attorney meetings and general court supervision rotations
  • Supervise court intake operations
  • Maintain a reduced individual caseload (approximately 25% of a staff attorney’s caseload)
  • Represent clients in administrative hearings, trials, and appeals
  • Collaborate with department leadership to ensure high-quality service delivery
  • Attend relevant departmental and agency-wide meetings

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the New York State Bar required
  • Minimum of 3 years of housing law experience
  • Experience working with similar populations in community-based settings strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated mentoring and leadership abilities
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills strongly preferred
