The Town of Wellesley Department of Public Works is seeking a Superintendent for the Park and Tree Division with the skills to lead a professional workforce responsible for the Town’s parks, public trees, conservation lands, and related public assets. This position plays a key role in supporting the Town’s environmental, aesthetic, and operational objectives in coordination with the DPW and the Natural Resources Commission.
Job Responsibility:
Oversee the operation, maintenance, and improvement of Town parklands, conservation lands, parks, recreation areas, water areas, public open spaces, and trees, including participation in the Town’s Snow and Ice Control Program
Plan, design, develop, and maintain landscapes and public spaces in accordance with Town and Departmental policies and environmental standards
Recruit, train, and supervise DPW employees performing maintenance, construction, and repair of parks, conservation lands, school grounds, recreation areas, and public shade trees
Serve as technical advisor to Town Boards, departments, and the public on landscape planning, grounds care, and plant and tree maintenance, including review of plans for commercial developments and civic improvements
Interpret, communicate, and ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and departmental laws, by-laws, regulations, policies, and directives, including ensuring required licenses and permits
Serve as Town Arborist, participate in Public Tree Removal Hearings, and serve as Deputy Tree Warden for the Natural Resources Commission
Develop, prepare, and administer operating and capital budgets
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Design, Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Park Administration, or related field or equivalent
Five years of experience in Arboriculture and Landscape Management or equivalent
Certified Arborist or Certified Landscape Professional
Five years of managerial experience, landscape planning, and project management
Two years of experience in winter operations
Training and/or experience in hazard tree identification
Ability to develop, draw, and present landscape design projects
Valid Class D Massachusetts Driver’s License
Nice to have:
MA Certified Arborist (MCA) or ISA Certified Arborist
MA Certified Landscape Professional (MCLP)
Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI)
certificate in Landscape Design or equivalent education and experience
knowledgeable in lake management and treatment techniques
