Job Description:

Wild Bear Nature Center is seeking Nature Education Interns to join our education team and help lead our Summer Nature Camp programs for school-age children. This is a hands-on, outdoor-focused position perfect for creative, child-centered folks who love nature and want to grow their skills in environmental education. Interns work alongside experienced Nature Educators to deliver engaging, nature-based curriculum that blends science, art, music, games, stories, crafts, and outdoor exploration—all outside whenever possible.

Job Responsibility:

  • Assist educators in planning and leading full-day, hands-on nature programs
  • Support safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environments
  • Help organize and maintain education materials
  • Bring fresh ideas and creativity to existing programs
  • Ensure children are safe, supported, and accounted for at all times

Requirements:

  • Interest in (or progress toward) a degree in education, environmental studies, natural science, or a related field and/or experience working with school-age children
  • Ability to pass Colorado Department of Human Services and FBI background checks
  • Two positive professional references
  • Interest or experience in full-day, innovative nature programming

Nice to have:

Previous experience is helpful but not required

  • Assisting with and aiding in the expansion and productivity of: Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) forestry projects with the U.S. Forest Service and National Forest Foundation to treat insect and disease infected trees, reduce hazardous fuels, and other activities to improve and restore forest and watershed health, including wildlife habitat
  • Inventory, boundary layout, and mapping for project implementation and forest management plans
  • Other duties, including sick tree calls, wildfire mitigation, and urban and community forestry
  • Virtual and in-person meetings with local and federal partners, collaboratives, and private landowners
  • Learn about ponderosa pine, pinon-juniper, and mixed-conifer forest management techniques through exposure in the field, as well as reviewing and participating in written forest management plans (FMPs)
  • Learn through FMPs about wildlife habitat improvement, endangered species identification, wetland delineation and hydrology, soil types, and Best Management Practices (BMPs)
  • Set up forest inventories using ArcGIS, Avenza, and Excel
  • Conduct forest inventories using laser range finders, tablets, D-tape, clinometer, GPS, increment borer, and other assessment tools and techniques
  • Data analysis using Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS)
