Job Description:

United Synagogue is seeking a Head of Welfare to oversee the wellbeing of all children, leaders (madrichim) and staff during Summer Camp. You will act as the first point of contact for welfare concerns, ensuring appropriate support, safeguarding compliance and a safe, nurturing environment.

Job Responsibility:

  • Lead on day‑to‑day welfare, ensuring children, leaders and staff feel safe, supported and cared for
  • Act as the first response for welfare issues, handling situations calmly and sensitively, and escalating concerns where needed
  • Serve as parent liaison for medical and pastoral matters, ensuring clear communication and appropriate follow‑up
  • Ensure safeguarding concerns are identified, recorded correctly and reported to the designated safeguarding lead(s) in line with policy
  • Work closely with senior staff to review welfare needs, maintain appropriate staffing coverage and support the daily camp itinerary
  • Advise and assist leaders with behaviour management and pastoral care, ensuring consistent and appropriate responses
  • Collaborate with programme teams to remove barriers such as homesickness, anxiety or social challenges
  • Coordinate welfare‑related logistics (e.g., medical room procedures, quiet spaces, parent communication) alongside the Head of Site

Requirements:

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to manage sensitive situations and maintain confidentiality
  • Good organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritise in a fast‑paced environment
  • Knowledge of Orthodox Jewish customs and practices

Nice to have:

  • Driver’s Licence
  • First Aid / Mental Health First Aid qualifications
