Aplin has partnered with an award-winning organization to recruit an experienced Substation Design Manager to support and complement their growing operations in Houston, Texas. Deep expertise in substation and Protection & Control design is essential.
Job Responsibility:
Lead and oversee the full substation design process from concept and feasibility through detailed design and execution
Ensure technical accuracy, constructability, and compliance with utility, grid operator, and project specifications
Lead Protection & Control (P&C) design activities, including relay logic, control schematics, SCADA integration, and interconnection requirements
Review and coordinate vendor drawings and documentation (transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, protection equipment), ensuring alignment with design intent and protection schemes
Collaborate closely with the Engineer of Record (EOR) to resolve technical issues and maintain design consistency
Coordinate with project management, engineering, and construction teams to support efficient project delivery
Participate in site walks, FATs, commissioning planning, and energization activities
Identify design nonconformances and implement corrective actions
Maintain strong client and stakeholder relationships
Supervise, mentor, and develop engineering staff
Occasional travel to client and project sites will be required
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation preferred
Minimum 7–10 years of direct experience in Protection & Control (P&C) and high-voltage substation design (mandatory)
Demonstrated experience developing relay schemes, control wiring diagrams, SCADA integration, and utility interconnection designs
Proven experience in substation testing, commissioning, and grid synchronization
Strong understanding of utility standards and interconnection requirements
Experience reviewing and coordinating vendor technical documentation
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple projects
Willingness to travel occasionally to client and project sites
